I want to own a house and have a garden in the back and a fruit tree in front and I want to tell the neighborhood kids that they can come pick the fruits when they want as long as they leave some for others, and I want to host dinners for friends and make too much food and make everyone go home with some leftovers, and I want to grow vegetables in my garden and beg my neighbors to take all this zucchini off my hands or I’ll have to eat zucchini for every meal for the next few months, and I want to give and feed and love but I need more goddamn money first

I personally found myself loving 1970s Ghana, Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire! Also 1920s and 1970s Japan for sure! Cambodian music: spectacular. Love Armenia and Mali as well. I’ve been told 70s Germany is weird and 30s Algeria is cool but I haven’t gotten around to those yet. Italy’s 1960s is bomb ofc but I’m biased ;)

Vilna Ghetto fighter Rozka Korczak-Marla comes to Tel Aviv, addressing the assembled in Yiddish about the extermination of Eastern European Jews.
David Ben-Gurion, who would soon become Israel’s first Prime Minister, then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew. “A comrade has just now spoken here in a grating, foreign language,” he declared.
Ben-Gurion’s shocking remark was part of a pattern of denigration expressed by advocates of Modern Hebrew within the Zionist movement during the pre-state years. The Israeli government hosted a reception in the early years of the Jewish state for Rozka Korczak, a survivor of the Vilna Ghetto who organized partisan units in the forests to fight the Germans. Korczak, according to Katz’s account, was one of the first partisans in the nascent Jewish state to speak about her experiences and her heroism in the Shoah.At the reception, she told her story in Yiddish.David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s founding father, became visibly upset as the survivor told her tale. In fact, these young men were beaten up in Tel Aviv by fellow Jews. Their crime? Speaking Yiddish in public.
Published in a Jewish weekly in Warsaw, this black-and-white photo, taken in 1928, is part of an exhibit that opened this week at New York’s YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, dedicated to “Palestinian Yiddish.” That is, Yiddish spoken before 1948 in the territory that encompasses the modern State of Israel.
A major focus of the exhibit is the outright hostility and disdain shown by many of the early Jewish settlers toward the Yiddish language. In creating a “new Jew” in what they called the Land of Israel (Eretz Israel), these fervent, Hebrew-speaking Zionists were determined to break away from anything that smacked of the Diaspora – first and foremost the language widely spoken by European Jews.
“Negating the Diaspora was a core part of the ideology of early 20th-century Zionism, and for this reason Yiddish had to be suppressed,” says YIVO academic adviser Eddy Portnoy, who curated the exhibit. “It was almost like a Jewish self-hatred.”

Before Veilguard’s release I was theorizing the Veilguard companion characters might have been designed to be parallels to the known Evanuris, but I couldn’t place all of them.
Now that I’ve played the game (almost twice) I think I’ve figured them all out.
- Rook - Elgar'nan, the leader. Controller of light and dark. The one who influences the others.
- Neve - Mythal, who can be a fierce protector or a source of inspiration and hope.
- Harding - Andruil, the hunter, who went mad from the Void and had to fight her way back
- Bellara - June, the inventor. Master of magical artifact.
- Lucanis - Dirthamen, keeper of secrets, who mastered the twin ravens of Fear and Deceit, and returned from death.
- Davrin - Ghilan'nain, Master of Monsters, Keeper of Halla.
- Emmrich - Falon'Din, the necromancer. Friend of the dead.
- Taash - Sylaise, who’s fire cannot be quenched.
Which leaves Solas to play the role he always has - Fen'Harel, the trickster and betrayer, who could ally with them, if only they will listen to his advice and try to protect their world as best as they can.

- Isseya (Davrin) - A Grey Warden corrupted by Blight who made monsters of her wards, the griffons.
- Johanna (Emmrich) - a necromancer who despises Spirits and the deceased and sees them only as tools.
- Dragon King (Taash) - an adaari who wants to use his fire breath to rule others
- Elgar'nan (Rook) - the final battle with the last standing god, who caused the corruption of all the others

One of my fave things about the DA games is the parallels of characterization between the protags.
The Warden and The Inquisitor both have a kind of dignity and honor about them. They’re both like “I absolutely did not want to be in this position, but here I am and we’ll get this done one way or another.” They both force people to work together for a greater good and unite under their banner and both are reasonably competent at their jobs.
Hawke and Rook on the other hand… things are just going wrong constantly for them, they are both consistently on their 13th reason, and their main defense is a “the horrors persist but so do I” attitude. They also did not want to be in the position they’re in but they’re “DOING MY FUCKING BEST CUT ME SOME SLACK I DON’T SEE ANYONE ELSE STEPPING UP” and if one more thing goes wrong they’re both going to just start biting people.
